Tragedy Strikes Manaslu

Tragedy struck early Sunday morning on the world's 8th highest peak (Manaslu, 26,759 ft), when an avalanche swept through Camp 3 claiming eight climbers.

Survivors quickly coordinated rescue and recovery operations as they evacuated the mountain. (Read dispatches from Alpine Ascents at www.everestnews.com)

As mountaineers, we know we are taking a risk every time we set foot on a mountain. We assume that risk and push for the summit anyway. Let this be a reminder that despite every safety precaution in the world, alpine environs are unpredictable and can turn ugly in an instant.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all involved in the tragedy. Thank you to those who have helped with the rescue.
